Kew gives the native range as southeastern Brazil and describes the species as a perennial associated primarily with the wet tropical biome. Kew also records introduced populations on several Pacific islands. If growth fades or stretches

NC State describes filtered medium light as ideal. Improve usable filtered light gradually before making unrelated care changes. Low-light tolerance is not the same as a preference for darkness.

If leaves soften or yellow while the mix stays wet

NC State identifies root rot as a risk and recommends porous, well-drained media. Inspect drainage holes, substrate structure, standing water, and how long the root zone remains saturated.

If the plant wilts and the root zone is genuinely dry

NC State says the species does not tolerate very dry soil. If the root zone is actually dry, water thoroughly and allow excess to drain, then observe whether the plant recovers.

If you see stippling, webbing or cottony insects

NC State calls medium light, such as sun filtered through a thin curtain, ideal. It also notes temporary low-light tolerance but warns against assuming every low-light location is equally suitable. A plant can survive dimmer conditions and still become less compact or less attractive over time.

Strong direct light can stress shade-grown foliage, especially if exposure changes suddenly. A practical indoor approach is bright or medium filtered light, then gradual adjustment if growth suggests the current position is too dim. Water, humidity & drainage

Avoid both permanently wet roots and extreme dry-out

NC State gives a useful middle path: soil can dry between waterings, but the species does not tolerate wet soil or very dry soil. It is also useful to compare related pages by scientific name. Baby rubber plant is Peperomia obtusifolia, a different species with a different growth shape.
