Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew currently accepts Pilea cadierei Gagnep. & Guillaumin in the nettle family, Urticaceae. Kew gives the native range as south-central China—specifically Guizhou and Yunnan—to Vietnam, and describes the species as a subshrub associated primarily with the subtropical biome. Those facts are the taxonomy backbone for this page.

The common names “Aluminum plant,” “Watermelon pilea,” and “Watermelon plant” refer to the leaf pattern: dark green leaves carry raised silvery patches that can look as though metallic paint was brushed between the veins. NC State describes elliptic to obovate toothed leaves with four rows of silver patches. That pattern is a useful clue, but scientific-name confirmation is still safer than using a common name alone because common names can travel between different plants.

If growth fades or stretches

Compare the plant’s current light with its earlier position. NC State recommends bright indirect light and warns against full sun. More useful filtered light can help weak growth, but moving a shade-grown plant straight into harsh sun can create a new problem.

If lower leaves yellow or drop while the mix stays wet

NC State specifically identifies overwatering or poor drainage as common root-rot conditions. Inspect drainage holes, substrate structure, standing water, and how long the root zone remains saturated before reaching for the watering can.

If the plant wilts and the root zone is actually dry

Dry wilt is a reason to check moisture, not a license to water every wilt automatically. If the root zone is genuinely dry, water thoroughly and let excess drain, then watch whether the plant recovers and whether heat or root problems are also involved.

“Shade tolerant” still means the plant needs usable light

NC State describes Aluminum plant as a tropical indoor plant that does well in bright indirect light while avoiding full sun. Its cultural-condition fields also include dappled and deep-shade settings, which reflect shade tolerance. RHS lists full shade to partial shade in its horticultural context. Do not assign every pale patch to disease: the species naturally has silver markings. Likewise, do not assign every yellow leaf to one cause. Climate & regional context

Indoor care and outdoor hardiness are not the same question

NC State gives USDA Zones 11a–12b as regional outdoor context. RHS uses its own UK-oriented framework and compact size context. ASPCA’s current Aluminum Plant page lists the scientific name as Pilea cadieri—a misspelling of the Kew-accepted Pilea cadierei—and identifies Aluminum Plant / Watermelon Plant in Urticaceae as non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses.
