Use the accepted Fittonia name, then reconcile old labels
Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew currently accepts Fittonia albivenis (Lindl. ex Veitch) Brummitt in the family Acanthaceae. Kew gives its native range as southern tropical America—Bolivia, North Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela—and describes it as a subshrub of the wet tropical biome. That is the taxonomy and native-range backbone for this page.
Older houseplant books and pet-safety pages may use names such as Fittonia verschaffeltii or Fittonia argyroneura. Kew records those as synonyms of the accepted species. They are useful for reconciling older evidence, but GardenSpecies does not present them as separate current species. Common names such as nerve plant, mosaic plant, or fittonia are convenient; the scientific name is what keeps source matching precise.
Wet-tropical origin does not mean permanently wet roots
Kew describes nerve plant as a wet-tropical subshrub. That ecological clue helps explain why warm, humid indoor conditions can suit the foliage. It does not mean the pot should remain waterlogged. Use the root zone, not the calendar, to decide when to water
NC State and RHS both support a moisture model that avoids severe drying while still relying on well-drained culture. NC State describes stem cuttings as an easy propagation method for nerve plant. A healthy stem section can be rooted under warm, humid conditions, then moved into a suitable well-drained medium after roots develop. This is useful for sharing a known plant or renewing a specimen that has become stretched.
Pinching tips encourages branching and a denser shape. That is especially useful for an ornamental foliage plant where compactness matters. Propagation from cuttings preserves the parent’s genetics; named-colour selections should still be labelled accurately rather than assuming every rooted cutting represents the generic species appearance.
Flowers can appear, but the foliage is the main attraction
Nerve plant can produce small flower spikes, but it is mainly grown for foliage. A flowering stem is not proof that every other care condition is ideal, and absence of flowers is not automatically a failure. Some growers pinch flower spikes when compact leafy growth is the priority.

ASPCA currently lists “Nerve Plant” under Fittonia verschaffeltii and classifies it as non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. Kew records Fittonia verschaffeltii as a synonym of accepted Fittonia albivenis, so GardenSpecies treats the ASPCA page as synonym-reconciled safety evidence rather than as a competing taxonomy.
