Kew gives its native range as China, specifically southwest Sichuan and western Yunnan, and describes it as a perennial or subshrub growing primarily in the temperate biome. That taxonomic range is the backbone for this profile.
Common names such as Chinese money plant, pancake plant, coin plant, missionary plant, or friendship plant are useful for recognition but are not precise botanical identifiers. “Money plant” in particular is applied to several unrelated plants in horticulture. Compact indoors, with round peltate leaves carried from the center
NC State describes Chinese money plant as a compact, erect, clumping perennial with fleshy, circular leaves and petioles that attach near the center of the leaf blade. That is useful indoor context, not a universal maximum under every climate and container condition.
The distinctive coin-like leaf form explains several common names, but form is also practical information. Long petioles orient leaves toward useful light, so a plant lit strongly from one direction can lean or present unevenly. RHS recommends turning bushy pileas periodically to reduce one-sided growth. Rotation should be gradual; it is a training choice, not a cure for inadequate light.
Bright indirect light is a stronger target than “put it anywhere indoors”
NC State and RHS both support bright or useful indirect light as the practical starting point. RHS recommends bright light without direct sun and notes that very low light can produce weak or straggly growth, while strong summer sun can scorch leaves. The durable lesson is that tolerance and preference are different ideas.
Place the plant where it receives useful diffuse light, then watch growth. A plant leaning strongly toward a window may be telling you more about light direction than about water. NC State's exact Pilea peperomioides profile describes the plant as safe for pets and children. ASPCA does list some other Pilea species as non-toxic, but related species are not interchangeable safety evidence.
