Kew gives the native range as Mexico to Colombia and describes the species as a subshrub primarily associated with the seasonally dry tropical biome. That introduced distribution is useful biogeographic evidence, but it is not a universal legal or invasive-status verdict. That node-rooting habit explains why propagation is easy and why outdoor escape can matter in climates where the species establishes readily. It also explains why a pot can become long and sparse: the plant naturally extends outward. Pruning a long stem above healthy nodes can encourage denser growth, and the removed healthy stem sections can become cuttings instead of waste.

Light: color is a signal, not a simple “more sun is better” rule

NC State says the species does well in filtered sun and can tolerate a range of light conditions.
