Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew currently accepts Aloe vera (L.) Burm.f. as a species in Asphodelaceae. GardenSpecies uses that accepted Kew record as the taxonomic backbone. The older name Aloe barbadensis Mill. remains important because it appears widely in horticulture, older literature and commercial products, but Kew treats it as a synonym rather than a second accepted species.

That distinction protects both users and search quality. A person searching “Barbados aloe” or Aloe barbadensis should reach the accepted Aloe vera record and see the synonym explained, rather than find a duplicate page that implies two independently accepted taxa.

Native range & introduced distribution

Kew’s native-range baseline is northern Oman in the Hajar Mountains

Kew currently states that the native range of Aloe vera is northern Oman, specifically the Hajar Mountains. Kew also records the species as widely introduced and naturalised across many regions. That broad introduced distribution does not make the plant “globally invasive.” NC State says it is considered invasive in some counties, which is a local ecological warning rather than a universal legal or regulatory status. Outdoor gardeners should verify local invasive-species guidance before planting where escape into natural areas is plausible.

Growth habit & size

Aloe vera forms a rosette of thick succulent leaves and produces offsets that can make a clump over time. NC State describes it as an evergreen succulent houseplant or warm-climate perennial and records division as the practical propagation route. Published size descriptions vary by source and context, so GardenSpecies does not promise one universal mature dimension. Container volume, light, climate, plant age and the number of offsets allowed to remain all affect the footprint. The useful planning rule is to expect a widening rosette/clump and provide a stable, well-drained container with room for offsets or periodic division.

Light & placement

Bright conditions are the common denominator, but sudden exposure still matters

NC State lists full sun to partial shade for Aloe vera. RHS guidance for aloes recommends full light with good ventilation. Those sources support a bright placement rather than deep interior shade. Indoor plants generally benefit from the brightest suitable window available, while outdoor summer placement should account for acclimation and local heat intensity.

A plant moved abruptly from indoor light to strong outdoor sun can experience stress, so gradual acclimation is more sensible than treating “full sun” as an instruction to move a shade-grown plant directly into intense midday exposure. Water, drainage & root health

Let the substrate dry between waterings and make drainage non-negotiable

RHS recommends a peat-free cactus compost or another quality peat-free compost improved with sharp sand or grit. Choose a container that drains freely and is stable enough for the rosette. A large pot filled with water-retentive mix can stay wet much longer than a smaller, airy succulent mix. Conversely, a small terracotta container in strong light can dry rapidly. The correct adjustment is based on the plant and substrate in front of you, not on an internet schedule copied from another environment.

Temperature & hardiness

Keep USDA context and RHS freezing guidance in their own systems

NC State currently lists USDA hardiness zones 10a through 12b for Aloe vera. RHS genus guidance states that aloes cannot withstand freezing temperatures. These statements answer related but different questions: USDA zones describe broad outdoor winter-climate context, while RHS guidance is a practical frost/freeze warning. GardenSpecies therefore does not collapse them into a made-up universal minimum temperature.

Kew describes yellow tubular flowers borne on a tall branched inflorescence. NC State likewise records tubular orange-to-yellow flowers. Overwatering is a bigger routine risk than chasing a universal pest schedule
