A Mexican Beaucarnea, not a true palm
Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew currently accepts Beaucarnea recurvata (K.Koch & Fintelm.) Lem. in the family Asparagaceae. Kew gives its native range as Mexico—specifically Oaxaca, Puebla, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas, and Veracruz—and describes the species as a caudex tree growing primarily in desert or dry shrubland.
The common name “Ponytail palm” describes the fountain-like crown of long recurving leaves, but it is not a palm. NC State makes the same distinction. Correct identity matters because palm-style care shortcuts can be misleading: the swollen base, slow growth, and dry-adapted root system are more useful clues than the common name.
The swollen base is a water-storage organ, not decoration
NC State describes a thick swollen stem or caudex that stores water beneath a rosette of long, narrow, arching leaves. In native habitat the plant can become a tree around 30 feet tall, while container-grown specimens are commonly much smaller; NC State's dimensional data gives roughly 6–8 feet high and 3–5 feet wide for the managed plant.
Keep those scales separate. A houseplant in a pot is not evidence that the species is naturally a six-foot shrub, and a 30-foot wild tree is not a realistic promise for an indoor specimen. Pot volume, root space, age, light, season, and climate all influence growth, and the species is notably slow.
Give useful bright light without assuming sudden exposure is harmless
NC State recommends a sunny window and lists full sun for the species. RHS also lists full sun. Indoors, the practical lesson is to give strong useful light when possible. If a plant has lived in dimmer conditions, however, move it toward stronger sun gradually rather than assuming a sudden outdoor exposure will behave exactly like its established habitat.
Light affects drying rate too. A bright warm plant may use water faster than the same pot in a dim cool winter room. That is another reason a watering calendar is weaker than inspecting the plant and root-zone conditions.
Drought tolerant does not mean “never water”
NC State says to water deeply in summer and allow the plant to dry between waterings, then greatly reduce watering in winter. Its good-drainage requirement and the caudex water-storage habit explain the logic: the plant has a reserve, but roots still need water during active growth and oxygen between waterings.
Use the environment rather than a weekday. Check how quickly the root zone is drying, whether the pot drains freely, how much light and warmth the plant receives, and whether growth is active. Drainage comes from the whole root-zone system
NC State recommends well-drained cactus- or succulent-type soil and lists sand/loam with good drainage. RHS likewise requires a well-drained medium. The exact commercial bag matters less than whether the finished combination of medium, container, drainage holes, root mass, and watering allows excess water to leave.
Oversized containers can stay wet for much longer around a small root system. Repot because roots, stability, substrate condition, or drainage justify it—not because a calendar says the plant must be moved every year. The caudex should not be treated as permission to bury the plant in a persistently waterlogged system.
Indoor culture and outdoor climate labels answer different questions
NC State lists USDA zones 10a, 10b, 11a, and 11b for landscape use and notes that temperate-region plants are commonly grown in pots and brought indoors for winter. RHS gives H1C and explicitly states that its hardiness ratings refer to UK growing conditions. Focus instead on stable leaves, sound roots, sensible growth, and a healthy caudex. Trying to force blooms with excessive fertilizer, water, or stress is not a source-backed care strategy.
Most trouble starts with the environment, not a mystery product deficiency
NC State lists no major endemic pest problem but notes that houseplants can encounter mealybugs, scale, and spider mites, along with stem rot, bacterial leaf streaks, and leaf spots. NC State and ASPCA list Bottle Palm, Elephant-foot Tree, Pony Tail Plant, and related common names for Beaucarnea recurvata. Kew also records older scientific synonyms including Nolina recurvata. These names can help with search and history, but the accepted Kew name should anchor this profile.

ASPCA currently lists the exact species as non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses
ASPCA's current Pony Tail/Bottle Palm entry names Beaucarnea recurvata and classifies it as non-toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. GardenSpecies uses ASPCA for that safety classification only. ASPCA still places the plant in Agavaceae, while current Kew taxonomy places it in Asparagaceae; Kew therefore remains the taxonomy authority.
“Non-toxic” is not permission to encourage chewing or a diagnosis for every exposure. Plant material can still cause mechanical or gastrointestinal upset in individual animals. Native-range and conservation records need careful interpretation
