Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew currently accepts Ocimum basilicum L. as a species in the mint family, Lamiaceae. Kew gives the native range as tropical and subtropical Asia to northern Australia and describes the plant as an annual or subshrub associated primarily with the seasonally dry tropical biome. GardenSpecies uses that Kew record as the taxonomic and native-range baseline.

The species is now cultivated and introduced across a much wider geography. Kew lists many introduced occurrences, but those should not be merged into the native-range sentence. Annual, perennial & climate context

“Tender annual” is practical garden language, not the species' only possible life history

These descriptions are compatible once climate is made explicit. They are not a reason to call sweet basil a cold-hardy perennial. A basil plant that persists in a warm, frost-free environment does not imply that the same plant will overwinter outdoors in a cool temperate garden.

Hardiness systems

USDA zones, RHS H1C and Missouri's annual-use range answer different questions

NC State currently displays USDA Plant Hardiness Zones 10a and 10b for O. basilicum. RHS rates sweet basil H1C, which in the RHS system means it can be grown outdoors in summer but is not hardy through cold conditions. Missouri Botanical Garden displays “Zone 2 to 11,” yet its profile clearly treats sweet basil as an annual and tells gardeners to transplant after frost risk has passed.

A rigid watering timetable is therefore less useful than checking the actual growing medium. Container size, temperature, wind, plant size and soil composition all change how quickly basil dries. Water when the root zone needs it, then allow excess water to drain. Seedlings are particularly vulnerable to poor moisture management, and RHS notes fungal damping-off risk when young plants are overwatered.

Frost & planting timing

Planting time follows local frost and temperature, not a universal calendar date

NC State advises transplanting or sowing after the last frost, and Missouri Botanical Garden likewise says to move plants outdoors once frost threat has passed. RHS recommends warm conditions and, for outdoor sowing in the UK, waits until early summer and consistently mild nights. These are regional expressions of the same physiological limitation: sweet basil is tender.

Gardeners should therefore use local frost dates and current weather rather than copying a planting month from a different climate. Harden young plants gradually before moving them outside, especially when they have been raised in protected indoor or greenhouse conditions.

Pinching, harvest & flowering

Seed allows gardeners to raise a crop efficiently, but named cultivar identity matters: use seed that is actually sold and documented as the intended cultivar when a specific colour, habit, flavour or disease-resistance trait is important.

Warmth is important during germination and early growth. RHS describes germination around 20°C in its growing guide and recommends bright, warm conditions for seedlings. The exact schedule should still follow local climate and the instructions supplied with the cultivar's seed rather than a single global calendar.

Downy mildew, Fusarium & pests

Disease resistance belongs to specific cultivars, not to sweet basil as a whole

NC State identifies basil downy mildew and Fusarium wilt as important disease problems and lists several cultivars selected for resistance. Missouri Botanical Garden also treats basil downy mildew as a significant foliar disease and recommends resistant varieties alongside sanitation, airflow and avoiding overhead watering. NC State additionally lists aphids and Japanese beetles as occasional insect problems; RHS notes aphids, slugs, snails and leafhoppers.

A resistance label should therefore stay attached to the cultivar that earned it. GardenSpecies does not call O. basilicum generally resistant because some selections perform well in disease trials. Likewise, a resistant cultivar is not a guarantee of zero disease under every environment.
