String of Pearls is a trailing South African succulent with spherical, water-storing leaves. The most useful beginner model is not “succulent, therefore forget it for weeks.” Give it a bright position, a very free-draining root zone, deliberate dry-down, and enough attention to catch both chronic wetness and prolonged stress before the stems decline.

Start with Curio, not the older Senecio label

Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew currently accepts Curio rowleyanus (H.Jacobsen) P.V.Heath in the family Asteraceae. Kew gives the native range as the Cape Provinces of South Africa and describes the species as growing primarily in the subtropical biome. That current Kew record is the taxonomy and native-range backbone for this profile.

Many labels and older houseplant books still use Senecio rowleyanus. Kew lists that as a homotypic synonym, along with Kleinia rowleyana. A synonym is an older or alternative scientific name tied to the same taxon; it is useful for reconciling horticultural and safety records, but it does not override the currently accepted name used here.

Common names can be even more confusing. “String of Pearls,” “String of Beads,” and similar names may be used in trade, while related plants such as String of Bananas are different species. Confirm the scientific name when care, safety, or provenance matters.

Native range & habit

A trailing houseplant with a ground-creeping ecological model

Kew places the species in the Cape Provinces. NC State describes String of Pearls as a succulent vine that creeps or trails, rooting where stems contact suitable ground in its native setting. In a hanging container, the same growth habit becomes the familiar cascade of bead-like leaves.

NC State gives a horticultural size around 1–2 ft high and 1–3 ft long or wide. That is a practical managed-houseplant context, not a promise that every plant reaches the same dimensions. Light, age, pruning, pot size, cultivar, root health, and how much stem is allowed to trail all affect the plant you see.

The rounded leaves reduce exposed surface area compared with a broad thin leaf, and NC State also describes a translucent leaf “window” that allows light deeper into the leaf. Those adaptations help explain the plant’s succulent character, but they are not permission to neglect it indefinitely.

Light

Bright light helps compact growth, but acclimation matters

NC State recommends bright indirect light indoors and partial shade outdoors in suitable climates. RHS gives bright conditions with some direct sun in its horticultural guidance. These are not contradictory instructions so much as a reminder that indoor window intensity, season, glass, latitude, and previous acclimation matter.

Too little light can produce sparse, stretched growth and wider spacing between leaves. Too much sudden direct sun can scorch tissue that developed under gentler light. Move a plant toward stronger exposure gradually rather than shifting it abruptly from a dim shelf to intense afternoon sun.

Turn a hanging basket periodically if one side grows strongly toward the light, but do not use rotation to compensate for a location that is fundamentally too dark. The plant still needs useful photosynthetic light across the canopy.

Water & drainage

Water-storing leaves do not eliminate the need to read the root zone

String of Pearls is succulent, and NC State notes that overwatering can lead to root rot. RHS likewise emphasizes free drainage and reduced winter watering. The practical beginner model is: water thoroughly when the root zone has dried appropriately, let excess water escape, then wait for meaningful dry-down before watering again.

A fixed calendar is unreliable. A small terracotta pot in warm bright conditions can dry much faster than a large glazed container in cool winter light. Root mass, medium, airflow, season, temperature, and container shape all change the interval.

Extreme dryness is not the goal either. NC State notes that both underwatering and overwatering can produce wilting or decline. Treat symptoms as clues and inspect the pot, medium, roots, light, and recent watering history together before deciding what to do.

Beginner distinction: succulent leaves store water; they do not make the plant immune to either root suffocation from chronic wetness or prolonged drought stress.
Soil & container

Build around fast drainage and air around the roots

NC State recommends a coarse or sandy, well-drained medium and points to cactus-style mixes or potting mixtures amended for drainage. RHS likewise calls for free-draining potting compost. The exact recipe is less important than the physical result: water should move through, excess should leave the container, and the root zone should not remain dense and saturated for long periods.

A drainage hole is especially important. A decorative outer pot can work if the inner pot drains and collected water is emptied. Do not compensate for a water-retentive container by adding tiny measured sips forever; that can create unevenly wet zones and salts while still leaving roots poorly aerated.

Propagation

Stem cuttings match the plant’s natural rooting habit

NC State lists stem cuttings and seed as propagation strategies and explains that nodes along a stem can root when placed against suitable potting medium. RHS separately recommends cuttings and division in its horticultural guidance. For a houseplant grower, a healthy stem cutting is the most direct method to understand.

Use a clean tool, choose healthy material, and place several nodes in contact with a suitable free-draining medium. Avoid burying the entire strand deeply or keeping the propagation pot permanently wet. New roots need moisture, but they also need oxygen.

Propagation is also a practical way to renew an aging, sparse plant. It is not a reason to ignore the conditions that caused decline in the parent: new cuttings placed into the same dark, wet environment can develop the same problems.

Flowers & fruit

Flowers are possible, but they are not the main indoor expectation

NC State describes small white flowers with prominent stamens and a cinnamon-like fragrance, with flowering more likely outdoors and relatively uncommon indoors. RHS also describes white-to-cream fragrant flowers in summer under its growing context. After pollination, the plant can produce seed-bearing structures with pappus adapted for wind dispersal.

Do not force flowering by overfeeding or keeping roots wetter. Healthy foliage and root conditions are the first goal. Flowering depends on maturity, light, season, and growing conditions that differ between homes.

Common problems

Several opposite problems can look similar

NC State notes that String of Pearls can decline from overwatering, underwatering, or inadequate light, and it lists pests such as aphids, whiteflies, fungus gnats, ants, and mealybugs. RHS also flags common glasshouse pests. This overlap is why symptom-based diagnosis should collect evidence before treatment.

  • Soft, translucent or collapsing beads while the pot stays wet: inspect drainage and root health before adding more water.
  • Wrinkling or wilting with a very dry, light pot: prolonged water stress may be part of the problem, but confirm the roots can still take up water.
  • Long bare gaps and sparse beads: inadequate light can contribute to stretched growth.
  • Scorched patches after a move: consider abrupt exposure to stronger direct sun.
  • White cottony clusters: inspect closely for mealybugs rather than assuming the marks are mineral residue.
  • Repeated stem collapse near the soil line: reassess how wet the medium remains and whether drainage/airflow is adequate.
Human & pet safety

Older names matter when reconciling safety sources

NC State identifies the plant as toxic if ingested and recommends avoiding ingestion and using protective handling where appropriate. RHS states that sap may irritate skin and that ingestion may cause stomach upset. These sources support a simple household rule: place the plant where children and animals are unlikely to chew trailing stems, and wash hands after pruning or handling sap if skin is sensitive.

ASPCA’s current succulent-safety article uses the older name Senecio rowleyanus for String of Pearls and says ingestion can cause stomach upset, especially vomiting, and lethargy. Hardiness numbers belong to a region-specific model

NC State gives USDA 9b–12b as its regional outdoor hardiness context. RHS uses the UK H2 scale and explicitly labels its hardiness ratings for UK growing conditions. These systems are useful within their own assumptions and should not be converted into one universal “safe outdoor temperature” rule.

Frost, cold wet soil, rainfall pattern, summer heat, and local microclimate all influence outdoor performance. A plant sold as an indoor hanging succulent in a cold-winter region should not be planted outdoors permanently simply because it survives summer patio conditions.

Related plants & cultivar boundaries

Not every “string of” succulent is String of Pearls

String of Bananas is commonly associated with Curio radicans, a different species with banana-shaped leaves. Other Curio species and named cultivars can also be sold with “string of” common names. Leaf shape, cultivar variegation, and trade labels should not be silently copied into the base C. rowleyanus description.

Kew lists a variegated form name in its synonymy, and horticultural trade may sell variegated String of Pearls. Treat variegation as a cultivar/form-level trait unless the exact plant label supports it, not as a universal feature of the species.

A simple routine for day-to-day decisions

  1. Confirm identity: look for Curio rowleyanus; older Senecio rowleyanus labels may refer to the same species.
  2. Give useful bright light: avoid both chronic dimness and abrupt unacclimated harsh sun.
  3. Protect drainage: use a free-draining medium and a pot that lets excess water escape.
  4. Read the root zone: water from actual dry-down and season, not a weekday.
  5. Inspect the whole strand: compare bead firmness, stem condition, pests, and pot moisture before diagnosing.

  7. Keep trailing stems away from chewing pets and small children.
  8. Preserve cultivar names: variegated or related “string of” plants are not automatically the base species.
