The famous movement is the daily change in leaf position: leaves are held more horizontally during the day and rise toward a more vertical “prayer” position at night. This kind of daily leaf movement is often called nyctinasty—a simple term for movement associated with the day/night cycle. It is useful biology, but it should not be turned into a simplistic sensor. A leaf held differently at one moment is not proof that the plant needs water.
When diagnosing the plant, combine posture with the root-zone moisture, light, temperature, recent moves, humidity, and visible leaf condition instead of responding to one evening or morning pose.
Think low and spreading rather than upright and tree-like
NC State lists a managed height of roughly 6–12 inches, while RHS gives a broader horticultural height and spread of about 0.1–0.5 metres. Those numbers fit the plant's low, spreading form, but they are context rather than a promise that every pot reaches exactly the same dimensions.
Cultivar, container volume, rhizome development, humidity, light, nutrition, age, and growing environment all influence the final plant. A dense nursery clump and a mature plant allowed to spread through a wider container can look very different even when both are the same species.
Useful filtered brightness protects the foliage pattern
NC State recommends low to medium or dappled light and warns that too much sun can bleach or damage the attractive leaf colors. RHS recommends partial to full shade. For most indoor situations, the durable interpretation is bright indirect or filtered light rather than strong, exposed midday sun.
Low light can also reduce color and pattern intensity. Do not solve that by moving a shade-grown plant directly into harsh sun. Increase useful brightness gradually and observe the foliage response. Light also changes water demand: the same pot can dry more slowly in a dim, cool room than in a brighter, warmer one.
Even moisture is not permanent saturation
NC State recommends keeping the potting medium evenly moist through the growing season, then holding back somewhat so the soil can dry more in winter. This produces a more useful rule than “water twice a week”: check the actual root zone. A small pot in warm filtered light may dry quickly. A large pot with dense mix in a cool room may stay wet much longer. High humidity does not mean wet roots. Humidity describes water vapor in the air; drainage describes whether the root zone retains both moisture and oxygen. The plant benefits when those two ideas are kept separate.
Use a moisture-retentive mix that can still breathe
The species' wet-tropical origin can tempt growers toward very heavy media, but a waterlogged container is not the same environment as a humid tropical forest floor. The practical target is a mix that holds useful moisture while allowing drainage and air around the rhizomes and roots.

NC State lists cultivated forms such as 'Fascinator Tricolor', 'Lemon' / Lemon Lime, and 'Silver Band'. Kew also treats several older names and varieties as synonyms of Maranta leuconeura, including names historically associated with kerchoveana, erythroneura, and massangeana forms.
The common name “prayer plant” is broader than this one species. Other members of Marantaceae, including plants sold under Calathea/Goeppertia names, can also move their leaves and be called prayer plants.
