Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew currently accepts Acer palmatum Thunb. as a species in the maple genus Acer, family Sapindaceae. Kew describes it as a tree of the temperate biome and gives the native range as southwestern Korea, Central Japan and South Japan. That narrower taxonomic distribution is the range GardenSpecies uses as the canonical native-range statement.

Other horticultural references sometimes use broader geographic shorthand. NC State, for example, carries an origin field that includes a wider sweep of eastern Asia. That field is useful for horticultural context but should not silently replace Kew’s taxonomic distribution. These are not necessarily contradictions: they reflect different horticultural systems, observations and the remarkable variability of the species and its selections. Exposure advice is conditional, not a blanket “never full sun” rule

NC State recommends dappled shade and protection from drying winds. Missouri Botanical Garden says full sun can work in the northern part of its range, while afternoon shade becomes more useful in hotter southern conditions. Hardiness alone also does not capture late-frost damage.
