Think woody cane and leaf rosette—not a miniature corn crop

NC State describes the species as a slow-growing broadleaf evergreen shrub with woody, often unbranched stems and broad strap-like leaves arranged around the cane. Its horticultural database lists roughly 3 to 14.5 feet in height and 1 to 3 feet in width, while Kew's taxonomic sources include shrub/tree forms in the native range.
Those measurements are context, not a promise that every indoor pot will reach the upper end. Container volume, cultivar, pruning, age, light, root health, nutrition, and indoor conditions all change managed size. A compact 'Janet Craig' cultivar and a tall cane-form plant can look very different while belonging to the same species.
Low-light tolerance is not a preference for darkness
NC State recommends bright to moderate filtered light. Direct sun can burn foliage, while very low light can produce narrower leaves and slower, weaker-looking growth. The practical lesson is to distinguish tolerance from preference: a Corn plant can survive lower indoor light better than many tropical foliage plants, but that does not mean a windowless dark corner is ideal.
If a plant has lived in dim conditions, do not move it abruptly into harsh midday sun. Increase useful brightness gradually. Light also changes water demand: a plant in brighter, warmer conditions may use water faster than the same pot in a cooler, dimmer room.
“Tolerates missed watering” is not a watering schedule
NC State recommends keeping the soil moist during the growing season and reducing water in winter. That is a seasonal principle rather than permission to water on fixed weekdays. Pot size, root density, temperature, light, airflow, medium, and season all affect how quickly the root zone dries.
Check the actual medium before watering. When water is needed, wet the root zone thoroughly enough for the medium to be evenly moistened, then let excess drain away. Do not leave a pot permanently saturated simply because the species comes from the tropics. Tropical habitat, indoor humidity, and waterlogged container soil are different things.
The useful diagnostic split is simple: a dry root zone plus drooping or dry tips suggests a different problem from a pot that remains wet for a long time while foliage yellows or declines. Collect evidence before changing the routine.
Good drainage matters more than a fashionable soil recipe
NC State recommends commercial potting soil in a container with drainage holes. The functional requirement is a medium that can hold useful moisture but still drain and admit air around the roots. The name “fragrans” points to flowers that are uncommon indoors
NC State describes flowers in long panicles and notes that they are strongly fragrant at night. It also says Corn plants flower and fruit only rarely as houseplants. The absence of flowers indoors is therefore not evidence that a healthy foliage plant has failed.
A plant grown primarily for foliage should not be pushed with excessive fertilizer, harsh light, or other stress merely to force bloom. Stable leaf growth and root health are more useful routine indicators.
Striped leaves are often cultivar traits, not universal species traits
The plain-green wild type is less common in the houseplant trade than named cultivars. NC State lists forms including 'Compacta' / Janet Craig, 'Lemon Lime', 'Limelight', 'Massangeana' / Mass Cane, 'Warneckii', and 'White Jewel'. These can differ in compactness and stripe color or placement.
That distinction matters when using photographs or writing identification content. A yellow-centered 'Massangeana' leaf should not be described as the only normal species leaf. ASPCA's current Corn Plant/Cornstalk Plant entries identify Dracaena fragrans and list the plant as toxic to dogs and cats; the current Corn Plant page also lists horses. ASPCA identifies saponins as the toxic principle and lists signs that can include vomiting, depression, appetite loss, hypersalivation, and dilated pupils in cats.
