Anchor the plant by scientific name, not by “elephant ears”
Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew currently accepts Caladium bicolor (Aiton) Vent. in the family Araceae. Kew gives its native range as Central America south through tropical South America to Argentina (Salta), and describes it as a tuberous geophyte of the wet tropical biome. That accepted name, family, native range, and growth form are the taxonomy backbone for this page.
Common names can be unusually confusing here. “Angel wings,” “caladium,” and “fancy-leaved caladium” often point toward cultivated Caladium, while “elephant ears” is also used for plants in other aroid genera, including Colocasia and Alocasia. Those plants can differ in growth, storage, and regional behavior. GardenSpecies therefore asks readers to confirm the scientific name before applying this page’s care or safety model.
Wet-tropical origin does not mean a permanently waterlogged pot
Kew calls Caladium bicolor a wet-tropical tuberous geophyte. “Geophyte” means the plant stores an important part of its growth system underground—in this case a tuber. That helps explain why leaves can disappear while the living storage organ remains. It also explains why an actively growing plant and a dormant tuber should not receive exactly the same watering routine.
Kew records the species as introduced in many places outside its native range. GardenSpecies does not turn “introduced” into a universal claim of “invasive,” “regulated,” or “prohibited.” Those labels depend on current local authorities and can differ by jurisdiction.

A tuber supports a seasonal canopy of highly variable leaves
NC State describes Caladium bicolor as a tender tuberous perennial commonly used as a seasonal bedding plant, container plant, or houseplant. Its leaves are typically arrow- or heart-shaped and can show green, white, pink, and red in many patterns. Those colour patterns are especially variable in cultivated selections, so GardenSpecies does not treat any one red, pink, white, spotted, or edged pattern as a universal species trait.
NC State gives a managed horticultural size around 1–2 feet high and roughly 1–2.5 feet wide. Missouri Botanical Garden similarly describes clumping plants in roughly the 1–2.5-foot range. These are useful garden/container scales, not a promise that every cultivar in every environment reaches the same dimensions.
Separate active growth, light stress, and dormancy before changing the routine
Caladium care is easier when you first ask what state the plant is in. A leafing plant in warm conditions is using water differently from a tuber whose foliage is naturally declining. Likewise, pale or scorched leaves after intense sun are a light problem, not proof that more water is the answer.

Keep the root zone consistently moist enough for growth, but preserve drainage. “Moist” is not the same as leaving the tuber in stagnant water.
Compare the old and new light exposure first. Strong direct sun can damage foliage; extra watering does not reverse a light-exposure mistake.
Ask whether the plant is entering a resting phase. As leaves disappear and active growth stops, continuing a summer-style watering routine can create a different problem.
Think bright shade, not a dark corner and not harsh midday sun
NC State places caladium in deep shade to partial shade and notes that the foliage can be damaged by direct sun. Missouri Botanical Garden likewise treats it as a shade-loving foliage plant. Indoors, “bright filtered light” is a useful translation: enough usable light to support the leaves, but not an abrupt blast of hot direct exposure.
Some cultivated selections may tolerate more sun than others, and acclimation matters. GardenSpecies therefore avoids one universal “X hours of sun” rule. If a plant was grown in shade, move it gradually rather than testing its limit in one afternoon.
Water the growth state, not the calendar
NC State recommends fertile, organic-rich, well-drained soil kept moist during active growth. Those ideas belong together: a plant can need regular moisture and still need oxygen around its tuber and roots. “Water guzzler” language is not permission to leave a container without drainage or keep the root zone permanently flooded.
Check the actual growing medium before watering. During warm active growth, aim to avoid prolonged severe drying. When the foliage naturally declines and the tuber rests, reduce the routine instead of continuing to water simply because it is Tuesday. Container size, temperature, airflow, substrate, and plant size all change how quickly moisture is used.
Seasonal dieback is a state change, and overwintering advice is regional
Caladiums can enter dormancy as conditions cool and days shorten. Leaves may yellow and collapse while the tuber remains the living storage organ. That can look alarming if you expect an evergreen houseplant, but forcing constant wetness onto a resting tuber is not the same thing as supporting summer growth.
NC State gives USDA Zones 9a–10b as regional outdoor context and describes digging and storing tubers where they do not overwinter outdoors. Its storage example uses dry conditions around 45°F or warmer. Missouri Botanical Garden gives similar overwintering advice specifically for the St. Louis gardening context. GardenSpecies treats these as regional horticultural models, not a universal date or calendar. Climate, indoor conditions, cultivar, and local frost timing vary.
Tuber division is the practical propagation route
NC State describes propagation by tubers. When dividing, start with healthy, firm material and clean tools. Each viable division needs living tissue capable of producing new growth. A split tuber is a wound, so avoid immediately turning the propagation container into an oxygen-poor saturated environment.
Seed exists botanically, but most home growers work with tubers because the plant is grown for foliage selections and cultivar traits. Division also preserves the parent’s genetics, which matters when you are maintaining a named colour pattern.
The foliage is the main event
Caladium can produce the aroid combination of a spadix surrounded by a spathe, but NC State describes the flowers as ornamentally insignificant. For most growers, the leaves are the reason to keep the plant.
Named cultivars can vary dramatically in leaf colour, pattern, and sometimes sun tolerance. GardenSpecies keeps cultivar claims at the cultivar level. A white-centered selection, a red-speckled dwarf, and a broad pink-veined selection should not be used to redefine the base species.
Calcium oxalate makes chewing and sap contact a real boundary
NC State identifies calcium oxalate crystals and contact irritation as important safety concerns for Caladium bicolor. Sap contact can irritate skin, and chewing plant tissue can cause burning and swelling of the mouth and other gastrointestinal symptoms. This is prevention/context, not a treatment guide.
ASPCA currently lists “Caladium” under the older horticultural name Caladium hortulanum and classifies it as toxic to dogs, cats, and horses, with insoluble calcium oxalates and oral irritation, swelling, drooling, vomiting, and difficulty swallowing among the listed signs. GardenSpecies uses that as older-name/common-name safety corroboration. It does not let ASPCA’s horticultural label replace Kew’s accepted Caladium bicolor taxonomy.
Because “elephant ears” can also mean Colocasia or other aroids, do not identify a chewed plant from the common name alone. If a concerning exposure occurs, contact a veterinarian, poison-control service, or other qualified professional rather than using this page as a home-treatment protocol.
Use symptom combinations, not one-leaf rules
Scorched or bleached patches after a brighter move: compare recent direct-sun exposure before increasing water. Yellowing while the mix remains saturated: inspect drainage and tuber/root condition before watering again. Edges crisp while the mix dries extremely fast: review root-zone moisture, heat, airflow, and humidity together. Leggy or weak-looking foliage in a dark interior: shade tolerance does not mean zero usable light. Sudden collapse after cold weather: consider temperature and dormancy instead of assuming the plant died overnight. Torn foliage outdoors: NC State notes that wind, hail, slugs, and snails can damage the fragile leaves.
