This profile therefore anchors facts such as native range and family to the accepted species, and labels cultivar-specific dimensions or care context when a source is specifically discussing ‘Bostoniensis’.

The species is native across tropical and subtropical America

Kew gives the native range as Tropical & Subtropical America and records the species as an epiphyte growing primarily in the subtropical biome. Its distribution record includes native occurrences across parts of the Caribbean, Central and South America, and portions of the southern United States. That is more useful than reducing the plant to a generic “tropical fern” label.

Kew separately records introduced occurrences outside the native range. Introduced does not automatically mean invasive, prohibited, or ecologically harmful in every place. “Non-toxic” is not the same as “encourage chewing.” Potting mix, fertilizers, pesticides, swallowed fibrous material, or unrelated household contaminants can still cause problems. NC State lists ‘Bostoniensis’ alongside many other selections such as ‘Dallas’, ‘Fluffy Ruffles’, ‘Tiger Stripe’, and others. That diversity matters for both care claims and image provenance.

A photograph of a strongly ruffled or variegated selection should not silently become the visual identity of the whole species. Likewise, a cultivar-specific growth description should stay labelled rather than being presented as a universal wild-species trait.

Regional invasive-status boundary

Warm-climate spread deserves local checking, not a universal label

NC State notes invasive tendencies in warm climates, and Kew records introduced occurrences outside the native range. Those facts are useful caution signals, but neither justifies a statement that Boston fern is invasive or regulated everywhere. Status depends on jurisdiction and ecosystem.
