Start with the accepted species, not the common name alone
Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew currently accepts Strelitzia reginae Banks in the family Strelitziaceae. Kew gives the native range as the Cape Provinces to KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa and describes the plant as a perennial associated primarily with the subtropical biome.
The common name “bird of paradise” is not unique enough for careful identification. Strelitzia nicolai, often called white bird of paradise, is a different and much larger species. ASPCA also warns that unrelated plants have been called bird of paradise. When care or safety matters, confirm the scientific name rather than trusting a shop label or flower colour alone.
Kew records introduced occurrences outside the native range. That does not automatically mean the species is invasive, regulated, or prohibited in every introduced region. GardenSpecies keeps distribution evidence separate from local ecological or legal status.
A widening rhizomatous clump is different from a woody houseplant trunk
Bird of paradise grows as a clump from underground rhizomes. Long leaf stalks rise from the base and carry broad, grey-green blades that can give the plant a banana-like silhouette. This matters indoors because a healthy plant can widen as well as grow taller. Do not assume a container is suitable forever simply because the top of the plant still fits the room. Root and rhizome crowding, drainage performance, pot stability, and the available floor space all matter.
Managed size is source- and environment-dependent. NC State gives roughly 3–4 ft in height and width for its horticultural profile. RHS gives about 1–1.5 m high and 0.5–1 m wide. Strong light helps, but acclimation still matters
NC State places the species in full-sun to partial-shade horticultural conditions, while RHS recommends full light under glass with protection from the hottest sun where appropriate. A beginner-friendly interpretation is to give Bird of paradise one of the brighter positions available while avoiding abrupt changes from dim retail conditions to intense unfiltered sun.
Sudden exposure can scorch leaves that developed in softer indoor light. Move the plant toward a brighter position gradually, especially after winter or after bringing a plant home from a shaded store. On the other hand, a permanently dim corner can support foliage survival without providing the light level needed for strong growth and flowering.
Light and water demand interact. A warm bright position may dry the root zone faster than a cool dim one. That is one reason a fixed “every Sunday” watering schedule is less useful than checking current conditions.
Seasonal watering is not the same as permanent wetness

NC State and RHS both support division as a practical propagation strategy. Because the species forms rhizomatous clumps, established sections can be divided when there are adequate roots and growing points to support the pieces. This is different from treating every leaf stalk as a cutting.
Seed propagation is also possible, but it is slower and does not guarantee a seedling will reproduce a named cultivar exactly. For a beginner, maintaining a healthy established plant is usually a better first skill than dividing a stressed or undersized clump.
Houseplant advice and climate suitability are separate questions
NC State lists USDA zones 10a–12b for its landscape context. RHS treats Bird of paradise as tender in the UK and recommends indoor, conservatory, or seasonal outdoor culture under its own regional framework. These two sources describe different climate systems and should not be merged into one universal hardiness claim.

Yellowing with a persistently wet root zone: inspect drainage, standing water, root condition, and watering frequency before adding more water.
Scorched patches after a move: consider a sudden jump in direct sun. Increase light gradually rather than assuming the plant needs a darker permanent location.
Leaf tearing: large leaves can split in strong wind or from physical damage. Tearing alone does not prove a nutrient deficiency or watering failure.
No flowers: inspect maturity, light, overall plant vigor, and root condition before using a “bloom booster” as the automatic answer.
